Bettina von Helversen, Zürich University: "Exemplar Retrieval Effects on Quantitative Judgment"
Research suggests that when judging an objects such as evaluating a future employee people rely on two sources of information, previously encountered exemplars stored in memory and abstracted knowledge and beliefs on how attributes of the object (e.g. the quality of the service) relate to the criterion. However, it is still unclear how those two sources of information interact. In the current presentation I will present research providing evidence that people can rely on both sources of information by showing how exemplar retrieval processes can be directly observed using eye tracking. In addition I will present experimental evidence suggesting that people are able to simultaneously draw upon on both sources of information during the judgment process and a computational model that describes this process.
