Laura Sakka, Uppsala University: “Emotional responses to music in individuals suffering from depression”
Music has a powerful influence on our emotions. This effect is often utilized in everyday life for emotion regulation, and in music-therapeutic interventions against depression. Given music’s ability to influence emotions and symptoms in depressed people, it is important to understand how these individuals respond to music. In this talk, Laura Sakka from Uppsala University presents research investigating depressed individuals’ responses to music, in terms of emotional reactions during music listening, and emotion regulation with the aid of music. She discusses how music listening has a dual potential for depressed individuals, functioning both as a beneficial resource for alleviating symptoms and as a contributing factor to the depressive mood, and also considers the implications for using music in psychotherapy.
