Professor Glenn Schellenberg, University of Toronto (Canada): "Predicting musical expertise: Do music lessons play a causal role?"
Claims that music lessons have non-musical side-effects are belied by a dearth of causal evidence. Musical expertise—defined as music training or natural ability—is associated with demographic, cognitive, and personality variables. The available literature suggests that most of these associations are the consequence of pre-existing individual differences.
